Beyond Peer Evaluation Scores: Using PAF and SAPA to Understand Student Contribution

Aug 25, 2026 • 8min read

Collecting peer-evaluation scores is often the easy part. The challenge is understanding what those scores actually reveal.

A shared team grade may hide differences in individual contribution. Unusually high or low ratings may reflect genuine differences in effort, but they could also point to inconsistent scoring or team issues that need a closer look.

InteDashboard’s peer evaluation functions include two measures that can help instructors make sense of these results: the Peer Assessment Factor (PAF) and Self Assessment over Peer Assessment (SAPA).

Two ways to understand student contribution

PAF and SAPA offer two different views of the same peer-evaluation results.

PAF shows how teammates assessed a student’s contribution compared with the expected contribution. SAPA compares the student’s own assessment with the average assessment given by their peers.

Used together, they help instructors see both the team’s perspective and the student’s self-perception.

Understanding the Peer Assessment Factor (PAF)

During peer evaluation, students rate their teammates against criteria such as participation, contribution and communication.

InteDashboard combines the scores each student receives and compares their average peer rating with the expected rating for an equally contributing team member. The resulting value is the student’s PAF score.

A PAF above 1 means the student received a higher-than-expected rating from their peers. A PAF of 1 indicates the expected level of contribution, while a PAF below 1 means the student received a lower-than-expected rating.

Instructors who include peer evaluation in grading can multiply the shared team grade by each student's PAF to calculate an individual grade. For example, in a 5-person team with a shared assignment grade of 80: a student with a PAF of 1.10 receives 88, a student with a PAF of 1.00 receives 80, and a student with a PAF of 0.90 receives 72.

Since students typically distribute a fixed pool of points across their teammates, rewarding one student above the expected level often means another receives slightly less, even when everyone is contributing well.

As such, instructors should review the score alongside written feedback and the wider team context. A PAF a little below 1 is common and doesn't, by itself, mean a student underperformed.

You can also check out this detailed interpretation guide covering specific score ranges.

Understanding Self Assessment over Peer Assessment (SAPA)

While PAF focuses on how teammates assess a student, Self Assessment over Peer Assessment (SAPA) compares the score a student gives themselves with the average score they receive from their peers.

A SAPA score above 1 means the student rated their contribution more highly than their teammates did—occasionally a sign the student is inflating their own score to raise their PAF.

A score close to 1 suggests their self-assessment broadly aligns with the team's view, while a score below 1 means the student rated their contribution lower than their peers did, often reflecting modesty rather than an actual shortfall.

SAPA, therefore, can help instructors detect any attempts from students to manipulate or "game" the system.

Spotting bias with rating ratios

Beyond the self-vs-peer comparison, InteDashboard calculates a ratio for every rating a student gives a teammate, comparing it with how the rest of the team rated that same person.

A ratio above 1 often reflects a generous or friendly rating; a ratio below 1 can point to a personal conflict or an unfairly harsh assessment.

InteDashboard flags unusual differences for instructors. By default, values above 1.15 or below 0.85 are highlighted, with stronger colour shading as more team members fall outside the limit (red flag).

This makes it possible to spot potential bias in specific ratings, not just in the team average, without reviewing every score by hand.

Interpreting PAF and SAPA together

PAF and SAPA are most useful when they are reviewed together. One shows how a student’s contribution was rated by their peers, while the other shows how closely the student’s own view matches that feedback.

The table below shows PAF and SAPA combinations and what they may suggest:

PAF score

SAPA score

Possible Interpretation

Above 1

Above 1

Peers rated the student’s contribution above the expected level, but the student rated themselves even more highly than their peers did. This may reflect confidence, but the difference in perception may still need a closer look.

Above 1

Around 1

The student is viewed as a stronger contributor and appears aware of it

Above 1

Below 1

The student may underestimate a contribution that teammates value

Around 1

Above 1

The student’s contribution is viewed as broadly expected, but they rate themselves more highly than their peers do. This difference in perception may need a closer look.

Around 1

Around 1

The student’s contribution and self-perception broadly align with the team

Around 1

Below 1

The student’s contribution is viewed as broadly expected, but they rate themselves lower than their peers do. They may underestimate the value of their contribution.

Below 1

Above 1

The student rates their contribution more highly than their peers do

Below 1

Around 1

The student is aware their contribution was lower than expected; makes for a natural opening for a direct conversation

Below 1

Below 1

Peers rated the student’s contribution below the expected level, while the student rated themselves even lower than their peers did. The student may be undervaluing their contribution and could benefit from supportive feedback.

These patterns are starting points, not definite conclusions. Instructors should also review written comments, rating ratios and the wider team context before deciding whether feedback or further discussion is needed.

Moving from mere peer evaluation scores to useful insight

Effective peer evaluation is about understanding what the scores may reveal about individual contribution, self-awareness and team dynamics.

By reviewing PAF and SAPA together, instructors can identify where results are broadly aligned and where a closer look may be needed. These insights can support more informed feedback, follow-up conversations and, where appropriate, individual grade adjustments.

"What I love about InteDashboard is that it allows me to administer individual readiness assurance tests (iRATs) without students seeing their score, while still letting them view their individual responses during the team test (tRAT). This feature has made a significant difference in how my students engage during team discussions. When I used other learning management systems like Canvas, DTL Brightspace, and Blackboard, students could always see their scores immediately after the iRAT—even though they couldn't see which answers were correct or incorrect. This often led to high-scoring students simply sharing their answers during the team test, which short-circuited the deeper, collaborative learning process that team-based learning is designed to support. With InteDashboard, students come to the tRAT ready to discuss and defend their reasoning, which leads to much richer conversations and better learning outcomes."

"It is fairly easy to navigate. Most of all, however, I have been completely impressed with how responsive the support staff has been to students and to instructors. I have had a fantastic experience with the software."
